Smoke-Free Campus Maps

The goal of the new policy is to provide a clean and healthy environment for all members of our community on our Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon and Virginia Science and Technology campuses.  In addition to indoor space, the policy also includes university-owned outdoor spaces as well as certain public spaces adjacent to GW buildings. We ask the GW community to help support this change by encouraging others not to smoke in front of GW buildings or in GW outdoor areas.

“Thanks for doing this.  I walk through your lovely campus almost every day to and from the Foggy Bottom metro.  It is good to know the air will be cleaner and pleasanter in the future.”

“Hello! As a student who has grown up with breathing problems, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this ban on smoking and hope that it makes a positive difference in student life.”

“I wish that this program was in place when I was a student at GW (I recently graduated in May 2013). As a person conscious of the health dangers of cigarette smoke, and as someone allergic to cigarette smoke, I used to have to hold my breath whenever walking to the entrance of Gelman or my dorm building... I think this policy is ahead of the times and will be inspiration for other institutions in the US. Thank you for initiating this policy, and good luck with implementation.”

"I want to thank you for instituting this policy - and I say that as someone who was a 2-pack a day smoker up until GW Smoke-Free was unveiled. This change was push I needed to quit. And trust me, it was much easier to make that decision knowing that I wouldn't be surrounded by smokers in front of Gelman or anywhere else on campus."
